Rat – Warren Holzman

2017 | 17 x 17 x 33 inches | Bronze, Steel

I want to capture a duality of play and austerity in material and content, as expressed through the craft of metalworking and blacksmithing. This interest culminates in processes like repoussé expressed as animal motifs on top of craft objects like tables or larger sculptures that take shape in fantastical visions. Shifting from the formalistic nature of craft, the motif is highlighted as subject, a table, functioning as a pedestal. Each piece derives its unique personality from the animal depicted, flirting with narrative without undermining their overt objectness.
