Aaron Deshields

Aaron Deshields is a sculptor, blacksmith, and fabricator based out of Detroit, MI. He received an MFA from Wayne State University in Metalsmithing, and a BFA in Sculpture from Appalachian State University. He is co-owner of Standard Fabrication & Forge, and has worked as an educator for College for Creative Studies, Touchstone Center for Craft, and Wayne State University.

The work that I create utilizes sculptural processes to explore the intersections of, artifact, infrastructure, and geography. Much of my work is composed of dense industrial materials such as iron, bronze, and concrete.The distortion of geologic time and anthropological artifact works to create an ambiguity within the work that references a hypothetical past and future. Through these material explorations, I construct architectural and sculptural forms that reference the monumental structures of civil infrastructure and sacred spaces.

Nate Weiss is a metalsmith residing in Johnstown. His metalworking education was self-directed starting in 2012, learning from craft schools such as Penland, Center for Metal Arts, Touchstone, and Peter’s Valley. Nate has worked as a professional metalsmith for several years, working a broad range of jobs, from architectural ironwork, to goldsmithing. This has allowed him to cultivate a unique skillset, the influences of which can be seen in his work. Focusing on traditional forging techniques, with an emphasis on benchwork, Nate’s aim is to create one of a kind objects that are dense with detail and ornamentation.

Taking inspiration from fantastical utilitarian objects from antiquity, my work aims to elevate the ordinary to ceremonial. My process is driven by complex and technical forging, followed by fastidious work at the bench.

Alexander is a material and process driven artist, giving equal attention to both conceptual and studio practice. These values generally manifest in the creation of substantial material objects and/or place-making through installation or intervention. He is particularly interested in the physical properties of his materials and the juxtaposition of these qualities against both metaphysical and formal negative space. Through this preoccupation, an exploration of existential and ontological concerns has become a recurring motif in his practice. He is a technically trained metalsmith, and has worked as a journeyman blacksmith in Austria, Spain, Estonia, and Italy. He holds a Master of Arts degree from the Estonian Academy of Art in Tallinn, and currently resides in the Big Bend region of Far West Texas, USA.

Ferrum Mater (Composition 01) is the first iteration in a developing body of work wherein the artist composes forged iron "stones" in various arrangements with inexhaustible potential. With each manifestation of a composition - as with the act of forging the stones - the artist embraces the chaotic and irreproducible quality of the moment and circumstance. No two stones are - or can ever be - identical. As such, a composition may be constrained to certain definitive parameters, but will nonetheless express itself in distinct and unreliable ways each time and place it is materialized. The artist is particularly interested in place-making as a creative activity. It is his understanding that "place" is not a singular point at the intersection of 3 axes independent of time, but instead a meaningful coincidence of two or more objects in proximity. The nature of place is relative both with regard to time and space, and with regard to whatever subjective meaning it may be imbued with.

Haley is a blacksmith and educator. He started working with metal in undergrad before moving to Austin, Texas, focusing his time on learning blacksmithing at Austin Community College (ACC). While in Austin and attending ACC, Haley worked in residential construction as a welder, and helped found the metalworking collective, The Austin Metal Authority. In 2014 Haley finished his graduate degree from SIU Carbondale and returned to Austin where he now runs the blacksmithing program at ACC and maintains his own studio practice, focusing on forged sculpture and utilitarian objects.

My work is generated by an exploration of working properties of metal, specifically iron, steel and brass. I apply traditional and modern techniques to these materials, to create sculptural forms. At the same time, I make sculptural forms as a means to work with and better understand metal.

Iron, steel, and brass give me a pallet of colors, textures, and physical properties that allow me a variety of options when making my work. These materials come with their own histories within the context of the human experience. They are complex, rewarding materials to work with.

My work starts as technical challenges and investigations into the process of blacksmithing. When new forms and process become illuminated, new sculptural ideas tend to follow. More often then not, this leads to more technical challenges and the drama continues. Technique inspired by the work, and work inspired by technique.

Born and raised in La Puebla, New Mexico, Maxwell received a Bachelors of Arts in Sculpture from The Colorado College in 2012. He has worked as an Architectural and Sculptural Blacksmith since 2013, and has traveled as a Journeyman in Germany and Norway. Represented by Ellsworth Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, his work is collected locally and internationally. Currently, he is the Forge Manager at Intracoastal Iron and Metalworks in Wilmington, NC, where he creates custom railings, gates, signs, and sculpture.

This work is an exploration of moments when I was hurt, disheartened, and confused. By focusing on the physical and mental processes required for the transformation of mass, I attempt to clarify and understand the choices, impact, and energy output in my relationships. Through the expressive nature of hands and gesture, and purposefully starting with matching pieces of bar stock, I interact closely with the process and materials to foster a conversation with my emotions, present state of mind, and the elements in front of me. I allow the original form and design to shift according to what the material needs and use that understanding to finalize my impact on the form. In turn, the process creates space for me to be present with emotions that are uncomfortable and difficult. The work is a meditation on situations that feel outside of my control and comfort, and making it is an attempt to understand and process that unease. The natural and formal elements of forged metal become artifacts and evidence of this reflective experience.

Dmitrii Volkov

Metal artist Dmitrii Volkov is a graduate of Russia's oldest Art and Design school, the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy in 2001, which specializes in contemporary and traditional decorative and applied arts, currently based in Maryland, US.
With four generations of ancestors involved in construction and architecture, and having been raised by his grandfather as one of the leading engineers in civil engineering, Volkov could not help but inherit a sense of structural strength. It is possible that reference books on construction equipment given by the grandfather to his four-year-old grandson, who could not yet read, but was fascinated by the graphic diagrams of units and mechanisms, led Volkov to an understanding and artistic sense of structural units.
His career has focused on commissions and distinctive design for residential and non-residential spaces, restoration, participating in exhibitions, competitions, and keep doing his search in art metal.

“Stone” is the third work in my series called “Treatise on Siege Machines”.
In my work I focus on combinations of volumes, patterns, colors or all together. They should interact, agree or disagree with each other. Listening to this conversation and forming this relationship are the most exciting things in art. Volumes often interact within a piece of art through crossing facets or absence of facets, polished planes and projecting parts as well as escape to the deep dark cavities and hollows. My favorite material is carbon steel. It proves amazingly deep in case of natural treatment, i.e. waxing, polishing, and patination. It is the oxidation ability that makes carbon steel far richer than precious metal in terms of its expressive properties. Traditionally, it is considered to be a disadvantage, yet indeed is a benefit due to the fact that it kind of makes up for what the painter did not paint thus making a piece of art beautiful and expressive.

Pete Braspenninx, the owner of Phyre Forge, is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Art and Design (2004). He is an artist, blacksmith, and educator. His work has been shown, collected, and published nationally and internationally. His work focuses primarily on building shapes and lines through visual connections and joinery using traditional skills to make modern forms.

This piece is an exploration into minding all the small details that make up the whole. Focusing on the big picture that is comprised of all the steps and parts that are necessary for it to exist. To emphasize the importance of all that pieces working together to function as one.
