In this workshop we will go over the basic equations and formulas to accurately calculate a variety of forgings and put your understanding to the test through forging execution in the shop. Learn how to understand stock calculations for various forgings. Accurately calculate the length of tenons and tapers, how much mass you will need to execute certain shapes, and so on.
With this newfound knowledge and understanding of these formulas a project will be outlined that will challenge you to put these equations to practical use to create an object joined together from various forgings that depend on your ability to correctly calculate mass, volume, and length.
This is a hands-on forging workshop with a strong mathematics component. The first couple days, time will be spent in the morning learning and practicing geometry and algebra related to the process of forging with the afternoons spent in the shop executing your calculations. The middle to end of the week a more complicated project will be introduced in which the execution will rely on your understanding of these concepts. Time will be spent solving the problems to understand your masses and then forging the project in the shop based on your calculations.
This valuable and underutilized skill set will have you forging much more efficiently and confidently. Knowing you have the right amount of material for your project is empowering and allows you to focus much more on the physical proceeds of forging and significantly limits material waste and guess work.

- Patrick Quinn has taught blacksmithing, fabrication, and tool making at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale, IL), Penland School of Crafts, Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Hereford College of the Arts, and the Adirondack Folk School. He has demonstrated at various conferences such as ABANA and the California Blacksmith Association. With an MFA in blacksmithing from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a BFA in sculpture from Alfred University, Patrick’s sculptural and functional works display a high level of craft and keen eye for detail. - Joe Doyle is a licensed Professional Engineer and an adjunct mathematics instructor at Montgomery College, a community college in Takoma Park, MD. He began his journey into metal forging 17 years ago, primarily focused on traditional hammer and anvil work. In recent years, he has become fascinated by modern forge work on larger scale power hammers through exposure at Center For Metal Arts. He is excited to participate in a workshop utilizing basic, practical mathematics to achieve a predictable forged object.
