The Center for Metal Arts is a community of metalsmiths, artists, and students exploring new skills or mastering advanced techniques in the metal arts. We offer beginner through advanced forging and metalsmithing workshops. With a state of the art facility, CMA specializes in technique based workshops and providing the metals community with quality forging tools made with pride by our in-house blacksmiths.

Established in 2003, the Center for Metal Arts attracts resident, regional and international instructors, and the staff includes award-winning blacksmiths and designers, studio techs and support staff. Two major learning tracks offer beginner to advanced workshops in Blacksmithing and Small Metals, and a strong visiting artist program contributes to an ongoing mission to add diverse topics and talents to the foundation curriculum.

  • Damascus Knifemaking Course with Nick Anger (@angerknives) at the Center for Metal Arts

During this workshop, Nick will demonstrate and talk in detail about damascus pattern welded steel.  He will forge one large “group billet” on Friday evening as a demonstration.

The “group billet” will be drawn out, divided into pieces, and each student will forge his or her own hidden tang, Japanese style chef’s knife. Various patterning techniques will be discussed and an emphasis will be placed on controlled hand forging.
